The optical microscope image shows fibrils of melanin. Clusters of melanin nanoparticles protect the body from the harmful effects of ultraviolet light, but EPSRC research student Ross McQueenie has shown that melanin can also be synthesised to form these unusual extended fibrils. A better understanding of fibril formation in general could lead to new materials and assist in the treatment of neurological diseases with which fibrils are associated, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. The research forms part of the EPSRC Science and Innovation Award “Nanometrology for Molecular Science, Medicine and Manufacture” led by Professor David Birch at the Department of Physics at the University of Strathclyde.
